4. maí 2006 GSE hópurinn kominn heim ? GSE Team Iceland is back home
Snemma að morgni 2. maí lenti íslenski GSE hópurinn í Keflavík. Stuttu áður hafði GSE hópurinn frá Minnesota og Norður Dakóta lent með vél frá New York. Okkur þótti sérstaklega vænt um að hitta formann Starfshópaskiptanefndarinnar Dögg Pálsdóttir sem tók á móti okkur ásamt fjölskyldum. Við lögðum af stað frá hótelinu í Williston kl 5 að morgni 1. maí og lentum í nokkrum hremmingum þar sem farangur okkar læstist inni í hótelbílnum. Eftir hálftíma seinkum var flogið til Dickinson, síðan til Denver þar sem við biðum í nokkra tíma áður en flogið var til Baltimore Washington. Þar biðum við enn í 4 tíma áður en við flugum með Icelandair til Keflavíkur og lentum kl 6 að morgni 2. maí. Við vorum því nokkuð þreytt en ánægð yfir að vera komin heim aftur, þó við hefðum verið tilbúin að fara þessa ferð aftur jafnvel aftur á bak. Við viljum þakka öllum þeim sem gerðu þessa ferð okkar að veruleika. Við þökkum gestgjöfum okkar og öllum Rótaryfélögum í Kanada, Minnesota og Norður Dakóta fyrir ógleymanlegar móttökur og einstakt tækifæri til að kynnast námum, verksmiðjum, sjúkrahúsum, fyrirtækjum, stofnunum og einstökum náttúruperlum sem við annars aldrei hefðum haft tækifæri á að sjá. Við höfum eignast vini og kunningja sem við vonumst til að hitta aftur ef ekki hér á Íslandi þá hvar sem verða vill.

The Icelandic GSE Team landed in Keflavik Iceland early morning May 2nd some half an hour later than the GSE Team from Minnesota and North Dakota that landed from New York. The chairman of Icelandic GSE Commitee, Dögg Pálsdóttir, welcomed us upon landing as well as our family members. We departed our hotel in Williston at 5:00 in the morning of May 1st but got in some trouble as our heavy luggage got locked inside the hotels van. After half an hours delay we flew to Dickinson, then to Denver were we waited some hours before flying to Baltimore Washington. There we waited for 4 hours before flying Icelandair to Keflavik Iceland and landed at 6 in the morning. We were a wee bit tired but happy to be back home again, though we were ready to do the trip all over again backwards. We want to thank all those that made our trip possible. We thank our host families and all the Rotarian members for their unforgettable hospitality and uniqe opportunity to visit mines, mills, firms, hospitals and natural monuments and parks, all the places we would never have been able to visit on our own. We made friends we hope to meet again, if not in Iceland than wherever possible.

In Williston at Rotary District 5580 Convention
We had a sunny day in Minot. Had breakfast with the director of Norsk Höstfest, North America´s Largest Scandinavian Festival, that is held annually in Oktober and invites artist and celebreties from all over US and the Nordic countries. INL Þjóðræknifélagið á Íslandi is planning a trip for Icelanders to visit it this year. Then Ann Krause escorted us to the Scandinavian Park where all the Nordic countries are represented with buildings and monuments. Iceland representativ is Leifur Eiriksson. When admiring the Norwegian Church we were yet again approched by a TV reporter and were interviewed about our trip and the purpose of it. Chester M Reiten, president of Norsk Höstfest and a Rotarian invited us to his office and we exchanged informations and ideas for Norsk Höstfest. We met with Ken Holand and people of Icelandic origin at lunch and were yet again surprise to meet people born in US and speaking and understanding Icelandic. One of the ladies showed us one of her books and asked whether we knew it. If we are not wrong it is Vidalins Bible. We sang some Icelandic songs together before saying good bye which was very hard this time. We spent the afternoon in the Zoo. We had several other choices but we all wanted to stay outside and take the opportunity in seeing the American eagle, the Bison, some dear and many other animal we had been trying to see on the road on our way across the country. The otter draw our attention though as it seem to want to play with us and it was also fun to touch the snakes. In the evening we met with some Rotarian members and our hosts in Minot for dinner and exchanged banners. The very next morning we drove up to Williston for the the 5580 District Convention. As we arrived there at noon and were invited to lunch we were overwhelmed when meeting all our friends and former hosts the last five weeks. It was like a family reunion. The next couple of hours we took part in the Icbreaker Event. Tomorrow morning our last presentation in US on this tour will take place. After that we will be able to start working on our presentation for Rotary District 1360 Convention that is taking place last weekend in May in Seltjarnarnes Iceland. Monday May 1st at 6:00 in the morning we are scheduled to fly to Denver, then to Baltimore and then to Keflavik where we are scheduled to land at 6.25 on Tuesday May 2nd. Two hours later the GSE Team 2006 from District 5580 will land in Keflavik for their 5 weeks tour and we look forward to meet them in our homeland and to be of their assistant if needed.

True to the spirit of the their place of origin, Team Iceland GSE 2006 was inspirational, resiliant, and unflappable. District 5580 was honored by their presence and their contribution to our understanding of the world. We hope we too provide them with profound experiences, deep insights, and valuable vocational days. Jill Zachary and I look forward to hearing stories once filtered through the strainer of time and reflection. Such insight will help district 5580 improve our GSE hosting capabilities. But mostly, we two look forward to gauging the growth this experience engenders - your affection for one another, your object of inquiry, and your personal benefit from undertaking this endeavor. We also look forward to seeing you all once again, and getting a taste of from whence you came...Horse-shit smoked salmon not withstanding...

Mikilvægum áfanga náð - Important day
Dagurinn hófst með heimsókn á Sjúkrahúsinu í Thunder Bay en Fort William Rotary klúbburinn hefur veitt því milljón dollara styrk úr happdrættisjóð. Fulltrúar okkar úr heilbrigðiskerfinu komust ekki hjá að gera samanburð við LSH. Síðan var farið í Lakehead háskólann og læknaskólann sem stofnaður var síðastliðið haust. Í hádeginu héldum við síðan fyrsta fyrirlesturinn á fundi Rotary Port Arthur. Í þeim klúbbi eru 85 félagar og er það fjölmennasti klúbburinn í borginni. Afhentum við 2 klúbbfána og síðan skiptu 2 þátttakendur með sér kynningunni sem fór fram með PP. Að því loknu sungum við íslenskan vorsöng. Við fengum fjölda spurninga um land og þjóð. Fyrrum umdæmisstjóri Dave Murray fylgdi okkur í allan dag og var okkur mikill stuðningur. Ritstjóri eins dagblaðanna sem sat fundinn hrósaði okkur fyrir góða mynd af landi og þjóð. Eftir fundinn heimsóttum við meðferðarheimili fyrir unga áfengis og eiturlyfjaneytendur. Þar fengum við einnig fræðslu um notkun tóbaks, sage og annarra jurta meðal frumbyggja. Að því loknu fórum við á Listasafn borgarinnar og skoðuðum ljósmyndasýningu nokkurra þekktra kanadískra ljósmyndara. Langur en ánægjulegur dagur og vorið er á næsta leyti. We started our day at Thunder Bay Hospital and learned that Fort William Rotary Club has been great sponsor for it the last 5 years. Then we visited Lakehead University and Medical School. At lunch we gave our first presentation at Port Arthur Rotary Club Meeting. There we handed over 2 banners from Rotary Borgir and Rotary Grafarvogur before our introduction. After that we sang a song about the first birds bringing spring to our country. We got a lot of questions and it was obvious that members were keen about our country. Former District Governor Dave Murray was at our site whole day and was a great support. In the afternoon we visited Dilico Treatment Centre and learned a whole new method of using tobacco and sage and also the meaning of the circle and yellow, red, black and white. Then we saw Modern Canadian Photography at Thunder Bay Art Gallery. It was a long and happy day for us and the spring is almost here.

Fyrsti starfskynningardagurinn 3. apríl 2006
Í dag var fyrsti starfskynningardagurinn þannig að við fórum hvert í sína áttina á vinnustaði og stofnanir allt eftir því hvert starf okkar er og áhugasvið. Fararstjórinn heimsótti Heilbrigðisstofnun og Miðstöð Heimaþjónustu sem hvoru tveggja eru að takast við kunnug verkefni í rekstri og sameiningarferli. Í kvöld munum við geta borið saman bækur okkar þegar við hittumst í Magnus leikhúsinu og sjáum Sexy Laundry með Robert Klein og Jo-Ann Waytowich í aðalhlutverkum. Gott veður í dag.
Today was our first Vocational Day so we went different places to learn and listen. The Team Leader visited the District Health Unit and attended their staff meeting and learned how to give bad news to 170 employees and walk alive from it. After lunch with Ms Carey an young Rotarian, she went to the Community Care Access Center and learned all about how to deal with ever growing demand from clients and ministry without getting burned out. We will meet tonight in Magnus Theatre and learn all about how to get Sexy Laundry. Great window weather.

1. apríl 2006 Fyrstu dagar GSE hópsins í Ameríku og Kanada
GSE hópurinn lagði af stað í 5 vikna ferð til US og Kanada fimmtudaginn 30. mars en þann sama morgun mættum við á fund í Rótarý klúbbnum Borgir. Flogið var til Minneapolis í US og síðan áfram til Thunder Bay í Kanada. Þar var lent um miðnætti á staðartíma og tóku Rótarýfélagar á móti okkur og gestgjafarnir óku okkur síðan til náttstaða á 4 heimilum þeirra. Þar munum við búa næstu viku.
Næsta morgun hittum við formenn 2ja Rótarýklúbba og formann GSE nefndarinnar í Kanada og snæddum með þeim hádegisverð. Síðan var farið í skoðunarferð um borgina. Upphaflega áttum við að fara í sleðaferð en veðrið leyfði það ekki þar sem snjórinn var að hverfa og það rigndi. Við sátum fund með innfæddum índíana sem sagði okkur frá lífsgildum indíana og trúarháttum. Um kvöldið snæddum við hjá gestgjöfum okkar og reyndum að ná upp tímamismuninn sem er 5 tímar.
